How Music Helps the Brain

Music helps with many things including memory recall, like when you hear a familiar song and you’re instantly taken back to a previous moment in time.

Research is showing how music not only helps you remember past memories, it may also be protective against cognitive decline as we age. A study in adults between the ages of 62-78 found engaging in regular musical activities increased the brain’s neuroplasticity which refers to the brain’s ability to learn and ‘rewire’ itself as needed.

In addition to memory and brain function, music helps define a person’s identity. Playing music to someone with dementia may have the ability to help remind them who they are and who they connect with.
