Oral Insulin May Be the Way of the Future of Diabetes Treatment

Injecting insulin several times per day can be disruptive and decrease quality of life for those with diabetes. Scientists have been working on finding alternatives to injections that allow for the same amount of absorption of this vital drug.

A study done in rats using a tablet that dissolves in the cheek and is absorbed through the buccal mucosa has shown nearly 100% of the insulin was absorbed meaning nearly all of it was used and none of it was wasted.

An oral option could improve the quality of life of patients with diabetes as well as be more cost-effective. While human trials are still needed, this could be an important breakthrough in diabetes treatment.
